About the JTBC
The Just Transition Bangladesh Centre (JTBC) is a specialized environmental action
centre advancing the just transition agenda in Bangladesh by promoting green jobs, just
energy transition, circularity and climate-resilient work, labour rights, carry-out policy
researches and advocating for climate justice, sustainable industrial production, and
climate-resilient employment within climate and environmental policy as well as labour
and community spaces. We work alongside workers’ organizations, trade unions, civil
society, and partners to ensure that Bangladesh’s transition to a green, low-carbon
economy remains inclusive, socially equitable, and protective of workers’ rights across
key industrial sectors.
Application Requirements:
- Candidates' Background: Applicants should be recent graduates from a public or reputable private university with a degree in Environmental Science, Disaster Risk Management, Law (with strong knowledge of environmental laws and regulations), Meteorology, or a closely related environmental discipline. Preference will be given to MPhil and PhD research students.
- 2 to 3 years proven Research Work Experience: Practical work experience, with a good understanding of research methodologies, policy review, field-based research, and preparation of reports, development of research proposals, Terms of Reference, Project concept notes, and case studies.
- Language Proficiency: Excellent command of both Bangla and English, in both written and verbal communication.
- Age Limit: Maximum 35 years.
Key Responsibilities:
- Policy Analysis and Briefing: Conduct rigorous legal and policy analysis of national labor laws, environmental regulations, climate policies, and international climate frameworks to draft high-quality policy briefs, position papers, and institutional statements.
- Monitoring and Strategic Reporting: Track national and global trends
regarding the advancement of a just transition, environmental and occupational safety, social protection, climate change policy, and industrial compliance to provide JTBC and institutional partners with regular, data-driven updates and feedback.
- Action Research on Climate-Resilient Employment: Design and execute research projects focused on green skills development, industrial restructuring, and the socioeconomic impacts on workers. Translate data into actionable strategies for a just transition in key sectors, including Ready-Made Garments (RMG), Ship Breaking, Construction, and the Circular Economy.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Advocacy: Represent JTBC in technical
working groups and maintain strategic relationships with workers organisations,government ministries, employers' associations, and civil society organizations to advance policy recommendations.
- Capacity Building and Training Support: Collaborate with internal teams to
translate complex research findings into accessible educational curricula and training materials (such as labor law and occupational safety guides) for sector-specific training programs.
- Research Output and Publications: Prepare comprehensive research reports, case studies, and articles focusing on ongoing work and emerging labor issues at JTBC.
- Digital Communication and Platform Management: Conceptualize, create, and update content for JTBC's social media platforms (such as Facebook pages) and official websites to raise visibility and awareness on key working issues.
The core MIS skill requirements for this position are categorized into three key areas:
1. Data Collection & Cloud Database Management
- Mobile & Digital Data Collection: Proficiency in configuring and deploying digital survey tools like KoboToolbox, ODK (Open Data Kit), or Google Forms for field-level data collection across industrial sectors (e.g., surveying workers in RMG or Ship Breaking).
- Database Hygiene & Quality Control: Strong skills in data cleaning, deduplication, and maintaining data integrity to ensure that the information fed into JTBC's systems is accurate and consistent.
- Cloud Storage & File Architecture: Ability to design and manage structured, logical database environments within cloud platforms like Google Workspace or Microsoft Sharepoint so that data is easily accessible to project leads and internal auditors.
2. Data Processing & Analytical Tools
- Advanced Spreadsheet Skills: Master-level capability in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets (specifically using Power Query, Pivot Tables, conditional formatting, complex nested formulas like VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and macro automations). This is the baseline language of most NGO reporting.
- Statistical Software Handling: Ability to manipulate, clean, and output basic datasets using statistical tools like SPSS or Stata to analyze the socioeconomic impacts of climate transitions on industrial labor forces.
3. Reporting, Visualization, & Dashboarding
- KPI Tracking & Automated Dashboards: Experience building or updating repeatable, user-friendly dashboards using tools like Microsoft Power BI, Tableau, or Looker Studio to showcase project progress against targets (e.g., number of factories compliant with green standards, workers trained, etc.).
- Infographic & Report Design: The skill to transform complex, raw quantitative data into clear, concise, and scannable charts, graphs, and summary matrices for quarterly project reviews and institutional donor feedback.
Specific IT requirements implied by this role:
1. Data Analysis & Environmental Tools (Technical IT)
- Data Management & Visualization: Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel or Google Sheets for sorting field research data, tracking environmental metrics, and building trend matrices.
- Geospatial & Mapping Tools (Highly Advantageous): Basic knowledge or experience with GIS software (like QGIS or ArcGIS), which is standard for
- Environmental Science graduates to map environmental impacts, industrial zones, or climate risks.
Statistical Software: Familiarity with software like SPSS or R for analyzing socioeconomic and environmental research data.
2. Office Productivity & Collaboration (Core IT)
- Cloud Collaboration: Seamless use of Google Workspace (Docs, Drive, Sheets, Meet) or Microsoft 365 (Word, OneDrive, Teams) to collaborate remotely with team members, institutional partners, and international networks.
- Document Formatting: Ability to use word processors professionally to format complex research reports, policy briefs, and training manuals without layout errors.
3. Digital Communication & Content Management (Operational IT)
- Platform Management: Practical knowledge of updating website content management systems (such as WordPress) and managing institutional Facebook pages or other social media platforms.
- Basic Graphic Design: Familiarity with tools like Canva to quickly convert dense environmental or policy data into clean, shareable infographics for public awareness.
