Job Title:Optometrist
To strengthen the diabetic eye care component of the programme, an Optometrist will be appointed to support retinopathy screening and eye health services for Type 1 Diabetes (T1DM) patients managed under BADAS PDRC.

Overview:
The Optometrist will conduct systematic diabetic retinopathy screening, perform fundus examinations and visual acuity assessments, and ensure accurate documentation of findings. The role requires timely referral of identified cases to ophthalmology services, maintaining a follow-up register, and regular reporting to the programme team. The post-holder will also support HCP training and field visits to regional and peripheral centres.
Responsibilities:
Retinopathy Screening:
- Conduct fundus photography/fundoscopy and visual acuity assessments for eligible T1DM patients.
- Grade findings (NDR, NPDR, PDR) using standardised classification (ETDRS/ICDR/WHO).
Follow-up:
- Ensure structured re-screening of patients with pathologic findings and maintain a retinopathy follow-up register.
Documentation & Reporting:
- Record screening findings in patient records and programme databases (including DHIS2).
- Prepare patient screening reports and contribute to periodic programme reports.
Referral & Coordination:
- Prepare ophthalmology referral letters and liaise with ophthalmologists at PDRC and affiliated hospitals.
- Track referral outcomes to ensure no patient is lost to follow-up.
Patient Education:
- Communicate findings to patients and caregivers and educate them on eye screening, vision warning signs, and glycaemic control.
Training & Field Visits:
- Contribute eye care content to HCP training events (in-person and virtual) and orient frontline staff at peripheral centres.
- Participate in field visits to regional centres for on-site retinopathy screening and technical guidance.
Requirements:
- B.Sc. in Optometry or equivalent qualification in Optometry/Ophthalmology Technology from a recognised university.
- Registered/certified with the relevant professional authority in Bangladesh (where applicable).
- Minimum 2 years of clinical experience in optometry or diabetic eye screening.
- Proficiency in fundus photography, fundoscopy, visual acuity assessment, and retinopathy grading.
- Prior experience in diabetic retinopathy screening is strongly preferred.
- Registered individuals in BADAS LFAC and CDiC programmes will be given preference.
- Good knowledge of diabetic complications in paediatric and young adult patients.
- Strong communication and counselling skills; ability to work with children, adolescents, and caregivers.
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams and willingness to travel to regional centres.
