Position: Intervention Officer

BADAS Centre for Health Research and Implementation (BADAS-CHRI) is a collaborative research centre between the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS), University College London Institute for Global Health (UCL-IGH), UK, and Department of Health Sciences, University of York, UK. Operating since 2002, BADAS-CHRI addresses critical health issues in maternal and child health, diabetes, hypertension, depression, and injuries through research and implementation projects. BADAS-CHRI is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Intervention Officer for the PECAN (Participatory Engagement for City Communities Against NCD Risk in Bangladesh and Nepal) project (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/global-health/research/z-research/participatory-engagement-city-communities-against-ncd-risk-bangladesh-and-nepal). This position will be based at CHRI's District Office in Faridpur Municipality.

PECAN is a cross-country study implemented in Faridpur Municipality, Bangladesh, and Nagarjun Municipality, Nepal, in collaboration with implementing partner HERD International of Nepal. The study aims to assess the burden of non-communicable disease (NCD) risk and to co-create, implement, and evaluate community-led interventions using the Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) method, addressing socio-environmental risk factors across age, gender, and socio-economic groups. A particular focus is on promoting physical activity among older women. Using a mixed-methods approach to adapt and evaluate PLA interventions, and engaging local stakeholders and civil society, the project generates evidence-based strategies to inform policymakers, practitioners, and citizens and to advance health equity and resilience in urban South Asia. This is an excellent opportunity for a skilled intervention implementer, manager, and monitor to apply and develop their skills with an international research team. The Intervention Officer shall be responsible for the following roles:

Job descriptions

• Familiarize with the study area, community context, and relevant stakeholders.
• Support implementation of community-led interventions (NCD Action Groups, women's physical activity groups, and digital health campaign).
• Manage and supervise field-level trainers, facilitators, and volunteers involved in intervention delivery.
• Actively monitor who is/isn't participating (by gender, age, socio-economic status) and adjust outreach to keep the intervention aligned with equity principles.
• Escalate issues (low attendance, community resistance, safety concerns) to the project coordinator promptly.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the line manager or office from time to time.
• Maintain activity logs across all interventions.

NCD Action Group intervention responsibilities

• Engage local authorities, decision-makers, and other relevant stakeholders in addressing the social, commercial, environmental, and political determinants of NCDs and their risk factors.
• Manage and support the community-led action group to function effectively by coordinating, guiding discussions, supporting follow-up, and strengthening members' capacity.
• Conduct, or supervise facilitators conducting, regular community-led intervention meetings in coordination with the group chairperson and members.
• Support preparation of meeting agendas, discussions, and documentation of decisions and action points.
• Support group members in identifying community priorities, developing action plans, and coordinating implementation of activities.
• Follow up on agreed action points and support communication among group members and stakeholders.
• Provide technical and logistical support for community-led activities as needed.

Physical activity intervention responsibilities

• Supervise physical activity group facilitators.
• Coordinate logistics and ensure supply of physical activity materials for PECAN-led women's physical activity groups.
• Review and follow up on adverse event reports.
• Oversee delivery of the monthly Q&A and peer support/sharing circle meetings.

Digital health intervention responsibilities

• Support rollout and troubleshooting of the Bangla mHealth messaging component (e.g., verifying message delivery).
• Monitor delivery rates and troubleshoot failed sends.
• Log participant opt-outs and complaints.
• Manage the project/community Facebook page: posting cadence, community replies, moderation, and engagement tracking (reach, shares, comments).
• Ensure all content follows equity/accessibility principles (low-literacy-friendly visuals, audio options).
• Flag and escalate any misinformation or negative community response.

Essential qualifications, experience, and knowledge

• Master's degree in a relevant field, particularly Public Health, Social Work, Sociology, Development Studies, or Public Administration.
• Five years of experience in public health programme implementation and management.
• Experience using participatory methods and implementing community interventions.
• Experience managing or supervising field staff, trainers, or facilitators.
• Experience with ethical and consent procedures.
• Basic knowledge of major NCDs, their risk factors, and the socio-cultural factors affecting NCD prevention and management.
• Experience writing reports.

Desirable experience, and knowledge

• Experience monitoring project activities and working with quantitative monitoring data.
• Lived experience and/or research experience relating to major NCDs, their risk factors, and the socio-cultural factors affecting NCD prevention and management.
• Demonstrated knowledge of the policy context of NCDs, and/or experience of implementing digital health and physical activity interventions or healthy aging interventions.
• Experience published writing.

Skills and aptitude

• Computer literacy — comfortable using Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.
• Working familiarity with social media platforms (Facebook, YouTube) for content posting and engagement tracking.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively with different research teams.
• Willing to travel to diverse communities, including both affluent and low-income areas, and to build and maintain good relationships.
• Ability to work across academic and non-academic disciplines and communicate effectively.
• Fluency in written and spoken English and Bangla.
• Demonstrated willingness to learn.

Job Location: District Office in Faridpur Municipality

Job Nature: Full-time.

Contract type and duration

• The appointment is on a contractual basis.
• The contract duration shall align with the project's intervention tenure (12-15 months), with renewal or termination based strictly on performance and the continuation of the project.

Salary and benefits

• Consolidated Tk. 60,000 – 70,000 per month (negotiable based on experience and skill).
• Festival bonus and other benefits as per organization rules.
• Friday and Saturday are the weekend, and BADAS-CHRI follows government holidays.
