The Red Cross-Red Crescent Movement is the largest volunteer organization in the world. Bangladesh Red   Crescent Society (BDRCS), a national society of the Movement, constituted on 31 March 1973 by the President's Order No. 26 of 1973 with retrospective effect from 16 December 1971, is the biggest humanitarian organization in the country. As an auxiliary to the government in terms of providing the humanitarian assistance, BDRCS has been working to prevent and alleviate human suffering through rendering humanitarian services in partnership with local authorities and communities across all the districts of Bangladesh through its 68 branches and dedicated network of volunteers, in line with the international humanitarian standards and adhering to the seven Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement.

BDRCS activities include Humanitarian Response, Climate Change Adaptation, Disaster Management, Health and Wellbeing, Capacity Building and Promoting Red Cross/ Red Crescent ideals and principles.

Currently BDRCS is looking for a suitable Bangladeshi candidate for the Red Crescent Blood Program. The position details are as under:

Job Purpose
The Medical Officer at the Red Crescent Blood Center is responsible for overseeing blood donation activities, ensuring donor and recipient safety, maintaining compliance with medical standards, and supervising the collection, testing, and distribution of blood and blood products.

Job Description/ Responsibilities-

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Donor Assessment & Care:
    • Conduct pre-donation medical screening of donors, including health history and physical examination.
    • Provide medical counseling to donors regarding eligibility, deferral, and post-donation care.
    • Address donor reactions and medical emergencies during or after donation.
  2. Blood Collection & Processing:
    • Supervise and ensure proper collection, handling, and labeling of blood samples.
    • Ensure compliance with protocols for blood storage, testing, and transfusion safety.
    • Collaborate with laboratory staff to monitor blood component separation and quality control.
  3. Patient & Hospital Coordination:
    • Liaise with hospitals, clinics, and healthcare providers to ensure timely supply of safe blood products.
    • Assess patient needs and advise on blood transfusion requirements.
  4. Regulatory Compliance & Quality Control:
    • Ensure adherence to national and international blood safety regulations (e.g., WHO, Red Crescent, national health authority guidelines).
    • Oversee infection control measures and safe disposal of biohazardous materials.
    • Maintain accurate medical records and reports.
  5. Training & Public Awareness:
    • Train healthcare staff, nurses, and volunteers in donor screening, blood collection, and emergency management.
    • Participate in awareness campaigns to promote voluntary blood donation and educate the public on blood safety.
  6. Research & Continuous Improvement:
    • Contribute to research and advancements in transfusion medicine.
    • Stay updated on medical best practices, emerging diseases, and innovations in blood banking.

Education

  • Education: MBBS degree from a recognized Medical College & Hospital.
  • Experience: Prior experience in blood banking, transfusion medicine, or clinical practice is preferred.

Experience, Competencies and Skills

Skills:

  • Strong knowledge of hematology, transfusion medicine, and donor eligibility criteria.
  • Excellent communication and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to handle medical emergencies with composure.
  • Good computer skills, especially in MS Office and data entry templates.
  • Knowledge of infection control and quality assurance standards.

Work Environment:

  • The role involves working in a clinical, laboratory and out-door setting.
  • Requires interaction with donors, patients, and healthcare professionals.
  • May involve working in emergency situations and blood donation drives (out-door).
