MHPSS Counsellor
Project: Sustainable Solution and protection for the Rohingya Refugee Community in Camps (funded by UNHCR) Project

Job Context
The MHPSS Counselor will provide critical mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) to survivors of gender-based violence (GBV), offering counseling services, conducting assessments, and supporting the case management team. Their role includes building project staff capacity on MHPSS, facilitating individual and group counseling, ensuring psychological well-being, and promoting mental health among survivors. The counselor will also provide training to staff and maintain close collaboration with other service providers to ensure comprehensive and effective services.
Key responsibilities include (not limited to)
1. Provide Psychological Consultations to Survivors (40%)
- Conduct regular psychological consultations for survivors of GBV.
- Assess survivors’ psychological condition using standardized tools and techniques, identifying individuals who require more intensive support.
- Provide psychological follow-up and ensure survivors’ improvement through continued support.
- Offer referrals for psychiatric intervention when necessary.
- Ensure all consultations and case documentation are handled confidentially.
- Ensure accurate documentation in intake forms and regularly update the MH Data Tool.
- Discharge survivors when their psychological well-being has improved, ensuring the survivor is prepared for the transition.
2. Supporting Case Management (20%)
- Provide supervision and guidance to case workers, ensuring they are adequately equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills for delivering psychosocial support.
- Assist case workers in identifying survivors in need of psychological counseling and provide guidance on how to address complex cases.
- Address challenges faced by case workers in their daily work, offering strategies and support to overcome these issues.
3. Technical Support and Capacity Building of MHPSS Services (20%)
- Ensure case workers are well-trained and have the tools and resources to deliver quality psychosocial support services.
- Conduct regular visits to all centers to monitor PSS service quality and observe sessions where possible, offering constructive feedback to improve service delivery.
- Review case files to ensure proper planning and execution of case management.
- Provide technical assistance for difficult or challenging cases, offering tailored solutions or consultations.
- Conduct regular training sessions, workshops, and one-on-one mentoring for staff to enhance their knowledge, skills, and capacity in providing high-quality mental health and psychosocial support services
4. Reporting and Networking (10%)
- Maintain regular communication with other service providers to ensure effective referrals and collaboration.
- Provide monthly reports to the Project manager on MHPSS activities and case management progress.
- Support the coordination of MHPSS services and participate in relevant working groups or meetings related to mental health services and GBV.
5. Embedding Feminist Leadership Principles and Anti-Racism Practices Across the Organization (10%):
- Foster an inclusive and equitable work environment by encouraging diverse voices, perspectives, and participation in decision-making processes.
- Collaborate with leadership to review and implement organizational policies that align with feminist and anti-racist values, ensuring they are actionable and measurable.
- Act as a mentor and role model for team members, demonstrating feminist leadership behaviors such as empathy, collaboration, and mutual accountability.
- Oversee accountability frameworks that address power dynamics, biases, and inequalities within the team and programming.
- Advocate for survivors’ rights and representation in program design and implementation, ensuring a focus on equity and justice.
- Build partnerships with community stakeholders to promote feminist and anti-racist values in project activities and outreach initiatives.
Relationships
MHPSS Counsellor will report to Project Manager
Required Educational Qualification and Experience
- Graduate or equivalent degree in social science, psychology, clinical social work, or a related field.
- Minimum 3-4 years of experience in GBV prevention and response, particularly with experience in MHPSS care, such as case management, psychological counseling, and emergency response.
- Experience working with marginalized communities, particularly in humanitarian or crisis settings, is highly preferred.
Technical Skill:
- Strong knowledge of mental health and psychosocial support techniques, including trauma-informed care.
- Ability to provide guidance and mentorship to junior staff and case workers.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and local dialects (Chittagong, Rohingya).
- Ability to assess complex psychological cases and provide appropriate interventions.
- Understanding of the cultural context and specific needs of the survivor population.
- Strong commitment to maintaining confidentiality and handling sensitive information.
- Ability to compile and submit accurate reports on program activities and case management outcomes.
- Quality and effectiveness of psychological consultations and follow-ups provided to survivors.
- Supervision quality and support to case workers and their professional growth.
- Timeliness and accuracy of reports and data collection.
- Successful implementation of MHPSS capacity-building initiatives.
- Effectiveness of networking and referrals with external service providers.
